This "Saving Thor Lake: A Study of Biodiversity, Ecosystems, and Human Impact Kit" will put high school students at the center of solving an ecosystem/biodiversity crisis in a fictitious polluted lake. The realistic scenario presented in this science kit emphasizes biodiversity's role in maintaining ecosystem health, and the lab as a whole illustrates the complexity of many of our world's environmental issues.

With this exciting hands-on activity, students will become both scientists and engineers!

• As scientists, they will run tests to quantify the performance of a pollution clean-up solution
• As engineers, they will compare this solution to two others and propose an optimal design - all the while understanding that there is rarely a "perfect" solution to such complex problems

This ecosystem and biodiversity lab consists of two parts:

• Part 1: Introduction & hands-on study of Nitrate & Phosphate levels in treated & untreated samples
• Part 2: Evaluation & selection of an optimal project for maintaining Thor Lake biodiversity

This high school science lab kit encourages hands-on learning and in-class discussion, and is ideal for students in grades 9-11 (ages 14 - 17).
